Practical Application of High Reliability Principles in Healthcare to Promote Clinical Quality and Safety Outcomes

Learn how to apply HRO principles to daily healthcare work processes and an effective daily safety huddle. Actual experiences illustrate challenges and successes. Successful culture change with enhanced proactive actual and near-miss reporting drove nurse sensitive indicators to consistent below-benchmark performance, increased individual and organizational resilience, and expands CNS role expectations.

Program Objectives:

  • Define high reliability organization (HRO) principles.
  • Describe how to apply HRO principles into daily healthcare work processes.
  • Discuss how HRO principles drive quality outcomes, safety, and culture.

Presenter: Cynthia Oster, PhD, RN, APRN, MBA, ACNS-BC, ANP, Nurse Scientist, Porter Adventist Hospital

Dr. Oster is a board certified clinical nurse specialist with more than thirty-five years of experience as a

registered nurse caring for adults across the age span.  Currently, Dr. Oster is Nurse Scientist at Centura Health

and clinical nurse specialist for critical care and cardiovascular services at Porter Adventist Hospital.  Dr. Oster

has advanced a strategy that overlaps high reliability principles with evidence-based nursing practice to achieve

multidimensional clinical quality and exceptionally safe patient care. She has provided a framework grounded in

evidence-based practice for approaching nursing care processes to yield highly reliable effective patient outcomes, yield cost saving outcomes and quantify nursing value. The strategy is unique in that it uses high reliability principles as an organizing framework for practical application of tactics to

improve patient safety and quality outcomes; and is useful to professionals doing the work of healthcare.  Dr. Oster

received her BSN from the University of Iowa; her MSN from the University of Nebraska Medical Center; a

post-master’s adult nurse practitioner certificate from the University of Colorado - Colorado Springs; and her PhD

from the University of Colorado Health Sciences Center, College of Nursing. In addition, she earned a MBA from

the University of Colorado – Denver, College of Business. Dr. Oster will officially become a Fellow in the American

Academy of Nursing in October 2017.
