Articulating the Value of Nursing: Changing Nursing from a Cost Center to an Investment

Join us for an insightful presentation, nursing update and discussion with nurse leaders from around the state at the AzONE Winter Forum.

Learning Objectives:

  • Describe the importance of data-driven staffing.
  • Discuss methods to measure the needs of patients and the workload of nursing.
  • Articulate the affirmative work of nursing toward improved outcomes.

Presenter:  Amy Garcia, MSN, RN

Amy serves as a Director & Chief Nursing Officer for Cerner Corporation.  Cerner serves more than 18,000 clients in 34 countries.  Amy serves as a thought leader around operational issues of health care, including staffing, scheduling, patient throughput and the use of technology to improve patient care.   Previously, Amy served as the Chief Nursing Officer / Chief Programs Officer for the American Nurses Association.  She served as a key member of the executive team, and was responsible for programs, policy, advocacy, ethics and quality, including the NDNQI.   She worked closely with specialty nursing organizations and advancing issues across associations, government and non-governmental organizations.   Amy served as the technical writer for the ANA’s “Safe Patient Handling and Mobility:  Inter-professional National Standards Across the Care Continuum.”  Amy also served as the Chief Executive Officer of the National Association of School Nurses.  Her work at NASN included policy, advocacy, programs and research support for children’s health and the profession of school nursing.  Amy has experience in hospital administration, risk management, small business ownership, legislative affairs and direct patient care.  She is a well known speaker on children’s health, health care safety and nurse staffing.  Amy holds a Masters in Nursing from The Wichita State University and is completing a Doctorate in Nursing Practice from American Sentinel University.
